Particular Dream By Oonah V Joslin
“Ron? What’s the matter? It happened again?” Serpens was a soothing presence – warm as infrared.
“I woke up – I didn’t know where I was. I felt dizzy and sick…”
“Is it that same dream? Tell me all about it and it’ll make it go away.”
“It’s not a dream. I’m flying, right? Only not flying in that nice floaty -- Hey-I-can-fly, dreamy way – more like being propelled you know? Close to the speed of light. And I’m trapped in this huge corridor – no way out. It presses in from all sides and it’s curved so I keep thinking I’m going to find something horrible round the next bend or the next… Or get smashed to bits. And it all happens so fast.”
“But you’re all right. You’re here with me now. Everything’s okay, Ron. You got away…”
“Of course I did or I wouldn’t be here.”
“So tell me about that part.”
“Well, I was already close to the speed of light so – I just used all my energy to get a jig along. Next thing I know I’m outa there. I’m someplace called Italy and”
“That’s my boy!”
“Oh but -- you should have seen their faces – the bipeds, I mean. They’re probably still trying to figure out how I got away. Because they think nothing can move faster than light.” Ron brightened visibly at the thought of them all dashing around in their slow motion befuddled way.
“So they’re primitives. Bi-peds?”
“Yes didn’t I say? And they’re huge and made of carbon atoms and hydrogen.”
“What an imagination you have.” Serpens glowed with pride.
“Their planet isn’t made of diamond like this one though – it’s mostly water and inferior rocks and it’s 4,000 light years away! Uncle Neut told me he’d passed through there a bunch of times on his travels but it was mostly empty space – not very interesting. I’ll have to tell him…”
“Uncle Neut -- I might have known.”
His uncle Neut Rino, was author of ‘Rough Diamond Planet Guide’ and ‘You Don’t Have to be Dense to Live Here…’
“I don’t think they were really interested in me. They were looking for some bozo called Higgs.”
“Never heard of him.”
“Well it’s may be just their name for him. He’s responsible for some massive explosion or other… Anyway it’s particular genocide down there and it’s all because of him. If ever catch him I’ll give him a piece of my mind.”
“You do that, son and when I see Uncle Neut, he’s going to get a piece of my mine. ‘Particular genocide’ indeed! Now, time to get back to sleep. It’s Pulsar Proton Picnic Day tomorrow – you don’t want to be too tired to chase sparticles.”
“Okay, Mum. Night-night.”
“Sweet dreams, love.”
