Bonfire Night By Tom (aged 10)

It was Bonfire night and Tom and his mum were going to the Sele in Hexham. Slowly they strolled down to the train platform. It was like the usual Bonfire night but little did they know that this would be more than just a night out in Hexham.

The train was at the platform almost the second Tom and his mum had got to the station. Soon the train had passed through Corbridge and was approaching Hexham. Just as it entered the station the train stopped to a standstill. The driver must have taken off the ‘Dead Man’s Brake’*  as the force of the jolt when the train stopped caused everyone to jump out of their seat. The time ticked by, Tom stared out of the window at the empty blackness and in the drivers cabin the driver fiddled about with the phone trying without luck to contact the men at the station. Finally the train moved on and stopped at Hexham station. As Tom walked out of the station with his mum he noticed two children, one of around 5, and one of 6 being consulted by some Hexham constabulary police officers. Finally Tom found Emma and Sam. They had some pizza and walked off through the park to the firework display.

In one of the small Hexham side streets a man was steadily putting together a fuse. Finally he managed to put together the fuse to a stick of dynamite. Once he had done that he waited for the detonator to get a signal from the dynamite. Then he pressed the button and the muffled boom came from below. Without anyone stirring he had started the Great Fire of Hexham!

Boom! ‘That must be the first firework’ shouted Tom excitedly. Tom’s mum however was not so sure. The ground has slowly become hot underfoot as if there had been an underground fire.

Then Tom’s mum became certain. There, lying on the ground was an old detonator and small whisps of flame were coming from the house basements. Quickly she turned on her mobile and had dialled two 9’s when a man jumped out at her and Tom from the shadows. Soon he had them both at choking point and had a knife pointing straight at their heart. At that very second a small flame came from underneath him. He stepped out of the way but he had given them enough time to escape.

They ran and ran dialling 999 at the same time. Soon they had got to Priestpopple street and a policeman had arrested the man.

On the way back, they saw 23 fire engines approaching the fire. Coaches and helicopters took the crowds away from the scene, while on the train platform a silent crowd entered a packed Northern train.

The End

*The ‘Dead Man’s Brake is a device so that if something happens to the train driver the train stops immediately
